Drupal - Publishing and Unpublishing Content
Section titled “Drupal - Publishing and Unpublishing Content”In Drupal, all content has a publishing status: either ‘Published’ or ‘Unpublished’. Published content is visible to website visitors (depending on permissions), while unpublished content is hidden from public view. This allows you to draft content, temporarily remove it, or archive it without permanent deletion.
Here’s how to change the publishing status of a content item:
Method 1: Editing a Single Content Item
Step 1 − Navigate to the ‘Content’ overview page by clicking ‘Content’ in the administration menu.
Step 2 − Locate the content item whose status you want to change. Click ‘Edit’ for that item.
Step 3 − On the content edit form, find the publishing status control. This is typically a checkbox labeled ‘Published’ located at the bottom of the form or within a ‘Save options’ section in the right sidebar.
To publish the content, ensure the ‘Published’ box is checked. To unpublish it, uncheck the box.
Step 4 − Click the ‘Save’ button to apply the change.
An unpublished item will typically be indicated as such on the ‘Content’ overview page (e.g., text might be grayed out or a status column will show ‘Unpublished’).
Method 2: Bulk Operations on the Content Overview Page
For changing the status of multiple items at once:
Step 1 − Go to the ‘Content’ overview page.
Step 2 − Select the checkboxes next to the content items you want to modify.
Step 3 − Above the content list, find the ‘Action’ dropdown menu. Select ‘Publish selected content’ or ‘Unpublish selected content’.
Step 4 − Click the ‘Apply to selected items’ button.
Clarification: ‘Published’ status is distinct from ‘Promoted to front page’ or ‘Sticky at top of lists’. A page can be published but not promoted to the front page, making it accessible via its direct URL or menus but not featured on the homepage.
Real-world application: Unpublish seasonal offers after they expire, keep draft blog posts unpublished until they are ready for review, or temporarily take down a page for updates.
