JIRA - Installation

Jira is a powerful project management tool offered by Atlassian. Understanding its deployment options is key before you begin. This guide provides an overview, focusing on current best practices rather than outdated installation specifics.

Atlassian offers Jira in primarily two hosting models:

  • Jira Cloud: This is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering. Atlassian hosts and manages the Jira software and infrastructure. Users access Jira through a web browser via a unique site URL (e.g., yourcompany.atlassian.net). This model eliminates the need for server installation and maintenance by the user.
  • Jira Data Center: This is a self-managed option designed for enterprises requiring high availability, performance at scale, and deployment flexibility. You install Jira Data Center on your own infrastructure (or a cloud provider like AWS, Azure). This option gives you more control but also requires managing the underlying hardware, software, and database.

Note: Jira Server (a previous self-managed option for smaller teams) is no longer available for new license purchases. Existing Server customers are encouraged to migrate to Jira Cloud or Data Center.

Setting up Jira Cloud is straightforward:

  • Sign Up: Visit the Atlassian website and choose a Jira Cloud plan (e.g., Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management).
  • Create Your Site: During sign-up, you’ll specify a unique name for your Jira site.
  • Initial Configuration: Once your site is provisioned, you’ll log in as an administrator and can begin configuring projects, users, workflows, and other settings through the web interface.
  • No Local Installation: There’s no software to install on your local machine or servers to run Jira Cloud itself, beyond a modern web browser.

System Requirements (Client-Side for Jira Cloud):

  • Browser: A modern, supported web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) with JavaScript enabled. Script-blocking tools might interfere with functionality.
  • Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is required to access your Jira Cloud site.

Installing Jira Data Center is a more involved process, typically handled by system administrators. It involves setting up server infrastructure and a database.

Key Installation Steps (Conceptual):

  • System Requirements: Before installation, consult the official Atlassian documentation for the specific Jira Data Center version you plan to install. Requirements cover supported operating systems (Linux, Windows Server), Java Development Kit (JDK) versions, database types (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server), and hardware specifications (CPU, RAM, disk space).
  • Download Installer: Download the appropriate Jira Data Center installer for your operating system from the Atlassian website.
  • Database Setup: Prepare an external database. Jira Data Center requires a robust database to store its application data.
  • Run the Installer: Execute the installer and follow the wizard. This typically involves specifying installation directories, a ‘Jira home directory’ (for application data), and TCP ports.
  • Application Setup: After the files are installed, access Jira via a web browser to complete the setup. This includes selecting ‘Set up Jira Data Center’, connecting to your database, providing your license key, and creating an administrator account.
  • Clustering (Optional but Recommended for Data Center): For high availability and performance, Jira Data Center supports clustering. This involves setting up multiple Jira application nodes connected to a shared database and shared file system, often behind a load balancer.

Important Considerations for Data Center:

  • Administrative Task: Installation and maintenance of Jira Data Center are significant administrative responsibilities.
  • Updates and Upgrades: You are responsible for applying updates and upgrading your Jira Data Center instance.
  • Security: Securing the server, network, and database is your responsibility.

The detailed steps for downloading specific .exe or .bin files, running old installers (like for Jira 7.x versions), and specific pop-up dialogues are now outdated. Always refer to the latest official Atlassian documentation for installing Jira Data Center.

Once Jira is set up (either Cloud or Data Center), users access it via a web browser using the designated Jira URL. Administrators will manage user accounts, project configurations, and system settings through the Jira web interface.

For any installation or setup process, the official Atlassian documentation is the most reliable and up-to-date resource. Search for ‘Install Jira Data Center’ or ‘Get started with Jira Cloud’ on the Atlassian website.
