JIRA - Navigating and Customizing Your Dashboard
Section titled “JIRA - Navigating and Customizing Your Dashboard”The JIRA Dashboard is your personalized landing page, providing an overview of important project information, assigned tasks, and activity streams. It’s highly customizable to suit your specific needs and role.
Key Elements of the JIRA Interface
Section titled “Key Elements of the JIRA Interface”When you log into JIRA, you’ll typically interact with these main areas:
- Global Navigation Bar: Usually at the top of the page, this bar provides quick access to core JIRA functionalities. Common items include ‘Your work’ (a personalized overview of assigned issues and recent activity), ‘Projects’, ‘Filters’, ‘Dashboards’, and a ‘Create’ button for new issues. An ‘Apps’ menu might also be present for accessing installed JIRA apps.
- System Dashboard (Default Dashboard): This is the initial dashboard you see. JIRA administrators can customize a default system dashboard for all users. It often includes gadgets like ‘Assigned to Me’ (listing your open issues) and ‘Activity Stream’ (showing recent project activities).
- Project Sidebar: When you navigate into a specific project, a sidebar (usually on the left) provides project-specific navigation, including links to the project’s backlog, active sprints, boards, issues, reports, and settings.
Understanding Main Navigation Links
Section titled “Understanding Main Navigation Links”Projects
Section titled “Projects”The ‘Projects’ menu in the global navigation bar helps you access various projects:
- View all projects: Lists all projects you have permission to see. You can often filter or search this list.
- Recent projects: Provides quick links to projects you’ve recently accessed.
- Project Categories/Types: When creating or browsing projects, you’ll encounter project types like ‘Software’ (for Agile development, often with Scrum or Kanban boards), ‘Work management’ (formerly Business, for general task management), or ‘Service Management’ (for IT support desks). The ‘Software’ type is central to many development team uses of JIRA.
Selecting a project typically takes you to its summary page or a default board.
Issues and Filters
Section titled “Issues and Filters”The ‘Filters’ menu (or an ‘Issues’ menu in some configurations) is your gateway to finding and managing issues:
- Search for Issues / Advanced Issue Search: Opens the issue navigator, where you can perform basic or advanced searches using JIRA Query Language (JQL) to find specific sets of issues.
- Pre-defined Filters: JIRA often provides quick filters like ‘My open issues’, ‘Reported by me’, ‘Recently viewed’, etc.
- View all filters: Access your saved searches (filters) and those shared with you. Filters are crucial for creating custom views and reports.
- Import issues from CSV: Allows for bulk creation or updating of issues from a CSV file.
Boards
Section titled “Boards”For Agile projects, ‘Boards’ are central to visualizing and managing workflow (e.g., Scrum boards for sprints, Kanban boards for continuous flow):
- View all boards: Lists all boards you have access to.
- Recent boards: Provides quick links to boards you’ve recently used.
Boards are typically associated with one or more projects and display issues as cards in different columns representing stages of your workflow.
Create Button
Section titled “Create Button”The ‘Create’ button, prominently displayed in the global navigation, opens a dialog to log a new issue (e.g., bug, task, story). You’ll need to select the project, issue type, and fill in relevant details like summary, description, assignee, and priority.
