Setting the Stage: Environment Setup
Setting the Stage: Environment Setup
Section titled “Setting the Stage: Environment Setup”Before we can build the next great app, we need to prepare our digital workshop. Tauri relies on a few key components: the system’s build tools, the Rust programming language, and Node.js for frontend asset bundling.
1. Installing System Dependencies
Section titled “1. Installing System Dependencies”Tauri relies on native system libraries to build the application window and webview interaction. These vary by operating system.
Microsoft Windows
Section titled “Microsoft Windows”You need the Microsoft Visual Studio C++ Build Tools. When installing, ensure you select the “Desktop development with C++” workload. This provides the linkers and compilers Rust needs.
You need Xcode Command Line Tools. You can install them by running the following command in your terminal:
xcode-select --installLinux requires specific development headers for WebKit and GTK. For Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions, the command looks like this:
sudo apt updatesudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-dev \ build-essential \ curl \ wget \ file \ libssl-dev \ libgtk-3-dev \ libayatana-appindicator3-dev \ librsvg2-dev2. Installing Rust
Section titled “2. Installing Rust”Rust is the engine that powers Tauri. The recommended way to install Rust is via rustup. Open your terminal (PowerShell on Windows) and run:
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 https://sh.rustup.rs -sSf | shFollow the on-screen instructions (default installation is usually fine). After installation, restart your terminal to ensure the cargo and rustc commands are available.
3. Node.js
Section titled “3. Node.js”While Tauri’s backend is Rust, the frontend build process usually relies on Node.js packages (like Vite, Webpack, etc.). Ensure you have a recent version of Node.js installed (LTS version is recommended).
4. Mobile Development Setup (Tauri v2)
Section titled “4. Mobile Development Setup (Tauri v2)”If you plan to target iOS or Android, you need additional tools:
- Android: Install Android Studio. You must use the SDK Manager to install the Android SDK Platform packages and NDK. Set your
JAVA_HOMEandANDROID_HOMEenvironment variables. - iOS: (macOS only) Install the full version of Xcode from the App Store. Open it once to accept the license agreement.
With these tools installed, your environment is ready for Tauri.
