SQL - Roadmap

Your SQL Learning Roadmap: From Novice to Expert

Section titled “Your SQL Learning Roadmap: From Novice to Expert”

This roadmap provides a structured, step-by-step path to master SQL. Whether you want to be a Backend Developer, Data Analyst, or Database Administrator, this guide will take you from the fundamentals to advanced, real-world applications. Remember to practice consistently and build the mini-projects!

Milestone 1: The Absolute Basics (Weeks 1-2)

Section titled “Milestone 1: The Absolute Basics (Weeks 1-2)”
  • What is a database, table, row, and column?
  • Understanding Primary Keys for unique identification.
  • Basic Data Types: INT, VARCHAR, BOOLEAN, DATE.
  • CREATE TABLE to define your data structure.
  • SELECT, FROM, WHERE for basic data retrieval.
  • Filtering with operators: =, !=, >, <, LIKE, IN, BETWEEN.
  • INSERT INTO to add new data.
  • UPDATE to modify existing data.
  • DELETE FROM to remove data.

Create a tasks table for a personal to-do list app. It should have columns like id (Primary Key), task_description (text), is_completed (boolean), and due_date (date). Practice adding, updating, and deleting tasks.

Milestone 2: Connecting the Dots (Weeks 3-4)

Section titled “Milestone 2: Connecting the Dots (Weeks 3-4)”
  • Foreign Keys and establishing relationships between tables.
  • The concept of NULL values.
  • Joining Data: INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN (and RIGHT JOIN).
  • Data Aggregation: GROUP BY with functions like COUNT(), SUM(), AVG(), MIN(), MAX().
  • Filtering Groups: HAVING clause.
  • Sorting and Limiting: ORDER BY, LIMIT, OFFSET.

Enhance your project. Create a users table and a projects table. Link your tasks table to both using foreign keys. Write queries to: 1) Get all tasks for a specific user. 2) Count the number of tasks in each project.

Milestone 3: Advanced Querying (Weeks 5-6)

Section titled “Milestone 3: Advanced Querying (Weeks 5-6)”
  • Subqueries (queries within queries).
  • Common Table Expressions (CTEs) using the WITH clause for cleaner, more readable queries.
  • Window Functions: ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), LEAD(), LAG() for complex analytical queries.
  • Set Operations: UNION and UNION ALL.
  • Conditional Logic: CASE statements.

Analyze your project data. Use a CTE and a window function to find the top 3 users with the most assigned tasks. Write a query using CASE to categorize tasks as ‘Urgent’ (due today) or ‘Normal’.

  • Transactions and ACID properties (COMMIT, ROLLBACK).
  • Database Indexes: Understanding how Clustered and Non-Clustered indexes speed up queries.
  • Database Normalization: Basics of 1NF, 2NF, 3NF for good database design.
  • The EXPLAIN or EXPLAIN ANALYZE command to inspect query performance.
  • Security Basics: Understanding SQL Injection and how parameterized queries prevent it.

Add indexes to the foreign key columns in your tables and use EXPLAIN to see the performance difference. Write a transaction to move a task from one project to another, ensuring the operation is atomic.

With a strong SQL foundation, you can now specialize:

  • Backend Development: Learn an ORM (Object-Relational Mapper) for your favorite language, like SQLAlchemy for Python or TypeORM for TypeScript.
  • Data Analysis & Science: Combine SQL with Python (Pandas) or R to perform deep analysis. Learn to connect SQL to BI tools like Tableau or Power BI.
  • Database Administration (DBA): Dive deeper into performance tuning, backup/recovery strategies, user management, and scaling.
