Python Deep Learning - Introduction
Section titled “Python Deep Learning - Introduction”Deep Learning, also known as deep structured learning or hierarchical learning, is a subfield of Machine Learning (ML), which itself is a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It focuses on algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the human brain, specifically artificial neural networks with multiple layers.
At its core, deep learning employs algorithms that use multiple layers of processing units to progressively extract higher-level features from raw input data. Each layer transforms the representation learned by the previous layer into a slightly more abstract representation. This hierarchical feature learning is a key characteristic distinguishing deep learning from traditional ‘shallow’ machine learning methods.
For example, in image recognition, the first layer might learn to detect edges, the next layer might combine edges to detect shapes or textures, a subsequent layer might detect parts of objects, and the final layers would assemble these parts to recognize complete objects.
Key characteristics of Deep Learning algorithms and networks include:
- Multiple Layers: Typically involve neural networks with several hidden layers (hence ‘deep’). Common architectures include Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and Transformers.
- Hierarchical Feature Learning: Automatically learn features and representations from data at multiple levels of abstraction, reducing the need for manual feature engineering required in many traditional ML approaches.
- Learning from Large Datasets: Deep learning models often require large amounts of labeled data (in supervised learning) or unlabeled data (in unsupervised or self-supervised learning) to achieve high performance.
- Use of Gradient Descent: Training typically relies on variants of the gradient descent optimization algorithm to adjust network parameters (weights and biases) to minimize a loss function.
- Computational Intensity: Training deep models can be computationally expensive, often requiring specialized hardware like Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) or Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).
Deep learning has achieved remarkable success across various domains, including computer vision (image classification, object detection), natural language processing (machine translation, text generation, sentiment analysis), speech recognition, recommendation systems, bioinformatics, drug discovery, and autonomous systems. In many of these areas, deep learning models have matched or even surpassed human expert performance.
This tutorial will guide you through the fundamental concepts of deep learning and demonstrate how to implement these powerful techniques using popular Python libraries like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
