Lua Game Programing
Lua - Game Programming
Section titled “Lua - Game Programming”Lua is a popular scripting language in game development due to its simplicity, ease of integration, fast execution (especially with LuaJIT), and its lightweight nature. Its garbage collection is also beneficial for managing memory in resource-intensive games. Many game engines and frameworks use Lua as a primary or alternative scripting language.
Prominent Game Engines and Frameworks Using Lua:
- LÖVE (LÖVE2D): A free, open-source 2D game framework that uses Lua for programming. It’s very popular for indie game development and rapid prototyping.
- Solar2D (formerly Corona SDK): A cross-platform mobile game engine that uses Lua for scripting. It supports iOS, Android, and other platforms.
- Defold: A free, lightweight, and cross-platform 2D game engine developed by King and the Defold Foundation, using Lua as its scripting language.
- Roblox: A massively popular online game platform and game creation system that uses a dialect of Lua called Luau.
- CryEngine: A powerful, high-end 3D game engine that has historically supported Lua for scripting game logic.
- Gideros Mobile: A cross-platform SDK for creating 2D games for mobile and desktop, using Lua.
- Moai SDK: An open-source, cross-platform 2D game engine that uses Lua. While development has slowed, it still has a community.
- ShiVa3D (Less Active): A 3D game engine and editor that supported Lua scripting. Its prominence has decreased.
Each engine/framework offers a unique set of APIs, tools, and workflows. We’ll briefly look at the capabilities of some key examples.
