Lodash - Lang

Lodash provides a suite of utility functions for common language-level tasks like type checking, value comparison, and cloning. While modern JavaScript (ES6+) offers native solutions for some of these tasks, Lodash functions often provide added convenience, handle edge cases more robustly, or offer features not directly available in the standard library (like deep cloning or checking for plain objects).

Below are some of the most commonly used and useful ‘Lang’ methods in Lodash, along with explanations of their relevance in modern development:

Method & SyntaxDescription & Modern Context
_.clone(value)Creates a shallow clone of value. Useful for copying objects or arrays one level deep. For nested structures, prefer _.cloneDeep.
_.cloneDeep(value)Recursively clones value. Essential when you need a completely independent copy of a complex nested object or array. Native JavaScript does not have a built-in equivalent for deep cloning (though structuredClone() is becoming available).
_.eq(value, other)Performs a comparison between two values to determine if they are equivalent. Similar to === but differentiates between +0 and -0 and considers NaN equal to NaN.
.gt(value, other)
.gte(value, other)
.lt(value, other)
.lte(value, other)
Checks if value is greater than, greater than or equal to, less than, or less than or equal to other. Simple convenience wrappers around native > , >=, <, <= operators.
.isArguments(value)
.isArray(value)
.isArrayBuffer(value)
.isBoolean(value)
.isBuffer(value)
.isDate(value)
.isError(value)
.isFinite(value)
.isFunction(value)
.isInteger(value)
.isLength(value)
.isMap(value)
.isNaN(value)
.isNative(value)
.isNull(value)
.isNumber(value)
.isObject(value)
.isRegExp(value)
.isSet(value)
.isString(value)
.isSymbol(value)
.isTypedArray(value)
.isUndefined(value)
.isWeakMap(value)
_.isWeakSet(value)
Type checking functions. Many have native JS equivalents (e.g., Array.isArray(), Number.isFinite(), Number.isNaN(), typeof). Lodash versions can be useful for consistency, handling null/undefined checks implicitly in some cases, or for types without simple native checks (like _.isBuffer).
.isArrayLike(value)
.isArrayLikeObject(value)
Checks if value is array-like (has a length property and is indexed) or an array-like object. Useful for working with function arguments, HTMLCollections, etc.
_.isEmpty(value)Checks if value is empty. Works for objects, collections (arrays, maps, sets), and strings. Very useful for checking if an object has own enumerable string keyed properties, or if a collection/string has zero length.
_.isEqual(value, other)Performs a deep comparison between two values to determine if they are equivalent. Checks own and inherited enumerable properties. Indispensable for comparing complex objects or arrays. Native JS has no direct equivalent.
_.isMatch(object, source)Performs a partial deep comparison between object and source to determine if object contains equivalent property values.
_.isNil(value)Checks if value is null or undefined. A common check, conveniently combined.
_.isObjectLike(value)Checks if value is object-like (not null and typeof is ‘object’). This includes arrays, functions, objects, regexes, etc. Useful as a broad category check.
_.isPlainObject(value)Checks if value is an object created by the Object constructor or one with a [[Prototype]] of null. Useful for distinguishing plain data objects from class instances or other object types. No direct native equivalent.
_.isSafeInteger(value)Checks if value is a safe integer. Equivalent to Number.isSafeInteger().
_.toArray(value)Converts value to an array. Handles various types like strings, array-like objects (NodeLists, arguments), Maps, Sets, etc. More versatile than Array.from() in some cases.
.toFinite(value)
.toInteger(value)
.toLength(value)
.toNumber(value)
.toSafeInteger(value)
.toString(value)
Conversion functions. Convert value to a finite number, integer, valid array length, number, safe integer, or string respectively. Handle edge cases and non-standard inputs gracefully.
_.toPlainObject(value)Converts value to a plain object by iterating its own enumerable string keyed properties.

While modern JavaScript continues to evolve, Lodash’s ‘Lang’ functions still offer significant value for tasks like deep cloning, deep comparison, comprehensive type checking (especially for plain objects), and robust value conversion. Always consider if a native JS solution is sufficient for your needs, but leverage Lodash for added power and convenience where appropriate.
