Common jQuery Properties and Utilities
Section titled “Common jQuery Properties and Utilities”Useful Properties and Utilities in jQuery
Section titled “Useful Properties and Utilities in jQuery”jQuery provides several built-in properties and utility functions that offer information about the jQuery environment or help with common tasks. Here are some frequently used ones:
| Property / Utility | Description |
|---|---|
| jquery | Contains the currently loaded jQuery version number (e.g., “3.7.1”). Useful for debugging or conditional logic based on the version. |
| length | A property of jQuery objects. Contains the number of DOM elements matched by the selector. |
| jQuery.fn | An object containing all jQuery instance methods (like .click(), .hide(), etc.). You can extend this object to add your own custom jQuery methods. |
| jQuery.ajaxSettings | An object containing the default settings for AJAX requests made using jQuery’s AJAX methods (like $.ajax()). Can be modified to set global defaults. |
| jQuery.fx.interval | Sets the animation firing rate in milliseconds. Lower values might result in smoother animations on faster devices but consume more resources. Default is typically 13ms. Note: Modern web development often prefers CSS Transitions and Animations for better performance. |
| jQuery.fx.off | A boolean value that, when set to true, globally disables all jQuery animations. Useful for testing or accessibility. |
Note on Deprecated Properties
Section titled “Note on Deprecated Properties”Older versions of jQuery included properties like jQuery.support (for browser feature detection) and context (on jQuery objects). These have been removed in modern jQuery versions (1.9+ and 1.10+ respectively) as better alternatives exist in native JavaScript or are no longer necessary.
For a comprehensive list, always refer to the official jQuery API documentation.
