Jenkins - Management
Jenkins - Management Interface
Section titled “Jenkins - Management Interface”The ‘Manage Jenkins’ page is the central hub for administering and configuring your Jenkins instance. Access it from the main sidebar menu.
It provides access to various administrative sections. Here are some key areas:
System Configuration
Section titled “System Configuration”- System: (Formerly ‘Configure System’) The main configuration page. Manage global settings like the Jenkins URL, admin email, executor behavior, global environment variables, tool installations (JDK, Maven, Git, Node.js), email server settings, security realms, authorization strategies, cloud configurations, and settings added by various plugins.
- Global Tool Configuration: A subset of ‘System’, focused specifically on configuring paths and auto-installers for build tools like JDK, Git, Gradle, Maven, Ant, Docker, etc.
- Plugins: (Formerly ‘Manage Plugins’) Install, update, remove, enable/disable Jenkins plugins. View installed plugins and search the extensive Update Center for available ones.
- Nodes: (Formerly ‘Manage Nodes’) Configure and monitor Jenkins agents (distributed build machines). Add new agents, define labels, configure launch methods (SSH, JNLP, etc.), and take agents online/offline.
- Clouds: Configure dynamic agent provisioning using cloud providers (AWS EC2, Azure VM, Google Cloud, Docker, Kubernetes). Jenkins can automatically start and stop agents on these platforms based on build demand.
Security
Section titled “Security”- Security: (Formerly ‘Configure Global Security’) The primary security configuration area. Enable security, choose a Security Realm (how users authenticate - Jenkins internal DB, LDAP, Active Directory, SAML, OAuth), and set an Authorization Strategy (who can do what - Matrix-based, Role-based Strategy plugin).
- Credentials: Manage sensitive information like passwords, API tokens, SSH keys, secret files, and certificates securely. Plugins and Pipeline steps use these credentials to interact with external systems.
- Users: (Formerly ‘Manage Users’) If using the Jenkins internal user database, create, delete, and manage user accounts and their details here.
- In-process Script Approvals: Approve or deny potentially unsafe Groovy scripts used in Pipelines or other areas (if granular script security is enabled).
Status & Troubleshooting
Section titled “Status & Troubleshooting”- System Information: View detailed Java system properties, environment variables, and plugin information for the Jenkins controller. Useful for diagnosing environment issues.
- System Log: View the main Jenkins system log in real-time or access historical log recorders defined by plugins or administrators.
- Load Statistics: Monitor Jenkins performance, including the build queue length, number of busy executors, and response times. Helps identify bottlenecks.
- About Jenkins: View the installed Jenkins version and license information.
Tools & Actions
Section titled “Tools & Actions”- Script Console: Execute arbitrary Groovy scripts directly on the Jenkins controller. Powerful for diagnostics, automation, or bulk changes, but requires extreme caution and administrative privileges.
- Jenkins CLI: Download the Jenkins command-line client (
jenkins-cli.jar) to manage Jenkins remotely (e.g., trigger jobs, install plugins, manage nodes). - Reload Configuration from Disk: Force Jenkins to reload its configuration files from the
JENKINS_HOMEdirectory. Useful if you’ve made manual changes or restored configuration files. - Prepare for Shutdown / Safe Restart / Shutdown: Options to gracefully stop new builds, restart Jenkins after current builds finish, or shut down immediately (less common via UI, often done via service management).
Other Sections
Section titled “Other Sections”Additional sections may appear depending on installed plugins, such as ‘ThinBackup’ for backups, ‘Global Build Stats’ for metrics, or specific configuration pages for major plugins.
Exploring the ‘Manage Jenkins’ page is essential for any Jenkins administrator.
