Docker - Toolbox

Docker Toolbox was an older solution provided by Docker for running containers on Windows systems that did not meet the requirements for Docker Desktop (like older Windows versions or those without Hyper-V virtualization).

Docker Toolbox is now considered legacy software and is deprecated. It is no longer actively maintained or recommended for use.

Key components like Docker Machine (used by Toolbox to provision a Linux VM via VirtualBox) and Kitematic (the GUI) are also largely superseded or deprecated.

The current standard for running Docker on Windows and macOS is Docker Desktop. It offers:

  • Native integration (using WSL 2 on Windows, Hypervisor framework on Mac).
  • Improved performance and stability.
  • A modern graphical user interface.
  • Integrated Kubernetes support.
  • Regular updates and support.

If you are currently using Docker Toolbox, it is strongly recommended to migrate to Docker Desktop if your system meets the requirements. Refer to the official Docker documentation for installation instructions.

This tutorial will focus on modern Docker practices using Docker Desktop or Docker Engine for Linux, and will not cover Docker Toolbox usage further.
