Cordova - Home

Apache Cordova is an open-source mobile development framework that allows you to build cross-platform mobile applications using standard web technologies: HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Think of Cordova as a bridge connecting your web application to the native capabilities of mobile devices. By default, web applications running in a browser cannot directly access device hardware like the camera or GPS. Cordova packages your web app into a native application wrapper and provides a consistent JavaScript API (via plugins) to interact with these native functions.

This tutorial is designed for web developers familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript who wish to extend their skills into mobile application development. We will cover key Cordova concepts, demonstrate how to use essential plugins, and guide you through building simple hybrid applications. The examples provided can serve as a foundation for your own projects.

Our goal is to explain the theory behind Cordova and hybrid app development, focusing on practical, simple examples to help you understand the core principles. We aim to equip you with the knowledge to start building your own Cordova-based mobile apps.

A solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is essential. Familiarity with modern JavaScript (ES6+) will be beneficial. While experience with Single Page Applications (SPAs) and frameworks like Angular, React, or Vue.js can be helpful for building more complex Cordova apps, it is not strictly necessary to follow this introductory tutorial. You will also need to be comfortable using the command line/terminal for project setup and build processes.
