Caffe2 - Defining Complex Networks
PyTorch - Defining Complex Networks
Section titled “PyTorch - Defining Complex Networks”In the previous lesson, you learned to define a simple, single-layer network using PyTorch’s nn.Module and nn.Linear. Building complex deep learning architectures follows the same fundamental principles. PyTorch provides a rich set of building blocks within the torch.nn module for constructing sophisticated models.
You can create complex networks by:
- Stacking multiple layers sequentially using
nn.Sequential. - Defining custom
nn.Modulesubclasses where you specify the layers in the__init__method and define the forward pass logic in theforwardmethod. This offers maximum flexibility. - Combining pre-built layers like convolutional layers (
nn.Conv2d), recurrent layers (nn.LSTM,nn.GRU), normalization layers (nn.BatchNorm2d), dropout layers (nn.Dropout), and activation functions (nn.ReLU,nn.Sigmoid,nn.Softmax, etc.). - Reusing existing modules or composing them into larger architectures.
PyTorch’s dynamic computation graph makes it easy to implement models with dynamic structures or control flow (e.g., using standard Python if statements or for loops within the forward method). You are encouraged to explore the extensive torch.nn documentation for a complete list of available layers and utilities: https://pytorch.org/docs/stable/nn.html
Once you have defined your network architecture, the next step is typically training it on your data. This involves defining a loss function (e.g., nn.CrossEntropyLoss for classification, nn.MSELoss for regression) and an optimizer (e.g., torch.optim.Adam, torch.optim.SGD). The training loop involves iterating over the dataset, performing a forward pass, calculating the loss, performing a backward pass to compute gradients (using loss.backward()), and updating the model parameters (using optimizer.step()).
After training, you can save the learned model parameters (the ‘state dictionary’) using torch.save(model.state_dict(), 'model_weights.pth'). This saved model can then be loaded later for inference on new data or deployed into production environments using tools like TorchServe or converted for mobile execution.
Summary
Section titled “Summary”PyTorch provides a flexible and powerful framework for deep learning. You can leverage pre-trained models from torchvision.models for tasks like image classification or define your own custom network architectures using nn.Module and a wide variety of layers. The process involves defining the model, preparing data, choosing a loss function and optimizer, and implementing a training loop. Trained models can be saved and deployed for real-world applications.
